On 9 May 1950, France's Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed the creation of a production community for coal and steel in his Paris speech. This "Schuman Declaration" led to the founding of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the Coal and Steel Community. This formed the cornerstone of today's European Union.
At the summit meeting of heads of state and government in Milan in 1985, it was decided that the European Union's Europe Day should be celebrated on 9 May each year to commemorate this event. Since then, numerous events and festivities have been held on this day since 1986.
