To mark the liberation of the Ausschwitz concentration camp by the Red Army on 27 January 1945, this day was declared the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust by the United Nations in 2005.
In one of his proclamations on 3 January 1996, Roman Herzog declared, among other things: "Remembrance must not end; it must also remind future generations to be vigilant. It is therefore important to find a form of remembrance now that will have an effect in the future. It should express grief over suffering and loss, be dedicated to the memory of the victims and counteract any danger of repetition."
To mark this day of remembrance, the flags at Rüdersdorf town hall are flown at half-mast on this day.
