In 1990, 3 October was designated a public holiday as the Day of German Unity in Article 2 (2) of the Unification Treaty. Accordingly, it is the German bank holidays and commemorates the coming into effect of the accession of the German Democratic Republic to the Federal Republic of Germany and the completion of German reunification on 3 October 1990.
The official celebrations for the Day of German Unity are held in the capital of the federal state that currently holds the presidency of the Bundesrat. This year, Hanover is the capital of the federal state of Lower Saxony. At this civic festival on 2 and 3 October, there will be a so-called state mile where the individual federal states and the federal government will present themselves.
A three-day celebration to mark German Unity Day will also take place in Berlin on Straße des 17. Juni and at the Brandenburg Gate
For this reason, public buildings all over Germany, including the Rüdersdorf town hall, are being flagged.
