Second anonymous grave completed

Press release 2021/10 of the municipality of Rüdersdorf near Berlin

In mid-April, the second anonymous burial ground was completed at the cemetery in Alt Rüdersdorf (Friedenstraße). The beautifully landscaped site offers space for 54 urn burials. The municipality of Rüdersdorf near Berlin is thus responding to the strong demand for alternative burial methods.

Diana Helbig from the cemetery administration of the municipality of Rüdersdorf near Berlin explains: "We are consistently pursuing the path we have taken here by creating further alternatives to the classic urn or coffin burial. It is also important to us that the bereaved continue to have a place to come to terms with their grief. The appropriately planned facilities have created a park-like atmosphere that counteracts the negative image of anonymous burials."

In the past, the municipality of Rüdersdorf has already created new and appealing facilities with communal tree areas and a burial option for so-called star children. Barbara Wirth, also from the cemetery administration, explains the need for such facilities: "In addition to the conventional options at the cemetery, new concepts such as the communal facilities in the municipality of Rüdersdorf near Berlin, which relieve people of the need to look after their graves but at the same time allow for mourning rituals, are also in great demand. The strong demand for the existing anonymous burial sites has led to the need to expand them or build new ones in order to adapt our cemeteries to the new needs of our citizens. This is because fewer and fewer relatives have the time or the opportunity to come to the cemeteries regularly to look after the graves."

The planning and design was carried out in co-operation with the GaLa-Bau Jähnke company from the Herzfelde district of Rüdersdorf. It was laid out in a semi-circle and the burial plots are uniformly sown with grass. A paved path and a planted raised bed were erected. Other elements, such as a central bench for seating and a generous flower bed, complete the design. Helbig and Wirth continue: "The future redesign of the cemeteries in the municipality of Rüdersdorf near Berlin is intended to invite people to simply sit down on a bench and let their senses rest. The cemetery offers silence and is therefore an ideal place to reflect on life and find new strength. The existing open spaces in other cemeteries in the municipality of Rüdersdorf near Berlin are also to be used to beautify the surroundings of the cemeteries with a park-like design. This is in keeping with the spirit of the times and will enhance the value of our cemeteries. This leads to the planned image gain. The cemeteries will be given a high-quality horticultural design, in addition to relieving the burden on relatives who do not have to do the maintenance themselves."
